Case Study: NatMag Magazine Publishing House.

Brief Introduction to the world of publishing:

Publishing is the process of production and distribution of literature or information; it can also be defined as the activity of making information available for public view. Traditionally, the term ‘publishing’ referred to the distribution of printed things such as books and newspapers.

 The invention of digital information systems and the internet caused the scope of publishing to expand so it now includes electronic resources such as electronic versions of books as well as micropublishing, websites, blogs and video games.

Publishing includes the stages of development, acquisition, copy editing, graphic design, production, marketing and the distribution of newspapers, magazines and so on.

NatMag Publishing House:

The publishing house I have decided to base my research on is called ‘NatMag’ (National Magazine) publishing house. NatMag was established in 1910 by William Randolph Hearst and is altogether owned subsidiary of Hearst Corporation, one of the largest communication companies.

  This year, they are celebrating their 100years of publishing. It is one of the United Kingdom’s leading media companies with over 20 brand platforms reaching more than 20million adults every year. They include world famous brands such as “Women’s glossy composition”; “Luxury fashion bible”; “Market leader men’s health”; “Good house keeping” and “Harper’s Bazaar”. All of these magazines can be read through multi platforms including print, online, mobile and social media.

"Q" Magazine

 “Q” Magazine contents page research.

·         The “Q” magazine has a double sided contents page.

·         It has a basic colour scheme that is Red Black and White.

·         There are some highlighted subjects in colours Yellow and Blue.

·         It contains an equal amount of the images and text (50/50).

·         The images on the 1^st page of the contents page are on the left hand side which implies that the audience are more likely to be more interested and attracted to the images than the text.

·         The majority of the images on the contents page are more posed than natural.

·         The images are large in size which makes the audience distracted from the textual part of the magazine which suggests that the images dominate the page.

·         The magazine is a big magazine filled with 218 pages of entertainment i.e.  Concerts and T.V reviews.

·         The contents pages are quite dull however the magazine still fulfils its purpose by catching the reader’s attention with its images.

·         The title “contents page” is written in Black and Red with the label “Q” on the top left of the page.

·         The colour of the background allows the title “contents page” to stand out as its White and this colour is neutral.

·         The contents page is also colour coded into different sections for example the “culture” sections is in Blue. I think this was a good idea because the magazine contains a lot of pages therefore; this makes it easier for the reader to locate the section in which they are interested in.

Audience Profiling

From my audience research for my music magazine, the questions I’ve have asked have given me enough information about the feelings of my target audience towards a music magazine. I made sure the genders of my audience would be mix so I was careful as to ask more boys than girls. Majority of my audience were 18year olds. This suggests that my magazine would mainly be appealing to people around that age (18, 17 and 16year olds). I am sure these results from my research would help me create an appropriate magazine for my target audience because I feel that the people I asked answered the questions from my questionnaire sincerely. This is because, majority have read music magazines and have different tastes and opinions regarding it.

Majority of the questions I asked my target audience I feel will help me with the final production of my magazine. I gave them a list of artists they would prefer to see in their magazine and the reason why they preferred that specific artist. Equal amount of people chose Beyonce (4) and Aretha Franklin (4). They were both compared; Beyonce was said to have a great singing voice; Aretha Franklin was preferred by some because they loved her music which was gospel and soul. I also asked this question to see what genres of music my magazine would contain.

 Beyonce is an RnB music singer, Aretha is a soul and gospel music singer, and lastly Cheryl is a pop music singer. With these results, the magazine I produce will definitely contain Gospel and RnB music. The theme would mainly be Gospel. I also asked my audience if they would feel inspired by artists of their age. This will help me to know if I need to include any as part of images or entertainment which would be in my magazine that will appeal to my target audience. The majority of people I asked said Yes (6) and the rest (4) felt otherwise.

All of these answers to my questionnaire will help me in great detail, because I will be able to create a magazine which appeals to my audience greatly.
